Father, son arrested in Texas drug bust

On April 4, Texas authorities arrested a father and son on suspicion of dealing drugs from their home. The incident occurred in Richmond.

According to the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office, members of the Fort Bend County Narcotics Task Force executed a search warrant at the defendants' residence on the 6700 block of Pickett, which is located in the Tara subdivision. During the search, officers allegedly uncovered 2.5 pounds of marijuana, 1,176 grams of suspected THC products, miscellaneous drug contraband and several hundred dollars in cash. The total street value of the seized drugs was estimated to be around $40,000.

The defendants, ages 57 and 25, are each charged with first-degree felony delivery of a controlled substance in a drug-free zone and third-degree felony possession and manufacturing of a controlled substance. They were processed at the Fort Bend County Jail.

Drug charges carry harsh consequences in Texas. If convicted, individuals charged with drug trafficking could be sentenced to years in prison and assessed a sizable fine. Therefore, many defendants charged with drug crimes choose to retain the services of a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible. An attorney could review the evidence and build a solid defense based on the circumstances surrounding the case. For example, an attorney may be able to prove that the drugs didn't belong to the defendant, which could lead to the charges being dropped. In other cases, legal counsel may discover police violated a defendant's rights during the investigation, which could also get the case thrown out of court. Even if the evidence is solid, it may be possible to negotiate an agreement that reduces the penalties in exchange for a guilty plea.
