Life sentence for woman in drug case

A 46-year-old woman was sentenced to life in prison on drug-related charges on Jan. 18. The woman pleaded guilty to several offenses including possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. The plea agreement included an agreement from federal and local law enforcement in other jurisdictions to not pursue drug charges from 2016 and 2017. The woman has already spent time in prison in Texas and Louisiana on drug-related charges in 1998, 2000, 2004 and 2012.

On June 23, 2017, law enforcement stopped a vehicle in Conroe in which the woman was a passenger. A narcotics K-9 alerted officers to the presence of 420 grams of methamphetamine on the woman's side of the car. Officers also recovered $18,000.

The woman did not appear in court later, and a warrant was issued. She was taken into custody on Aug. 17. Several local and state law enforcement agencies were involved in the case.

People taken into custody on drug charges should be aware that the consequences can be serious even if the amounts are smaller than in this situation and if they do not have a prior history of convictions. A drug conviction does not just affect people legally but can have repercussions in other areas of their lives as well, affecting their careers and their access to some financial aid for education and more. However, there may also be avenues of defense, or charges might even be dismissed in some circumstances. Another option may be a plea bargain, in which a person pleads guilty in exchange for lesser penalties or for having some charges dropped or reduced.
