Misguided attempt at problem solving ends with criminal charges

On Behalf of | May 11, 2017 | Uncategorized

In the heat of an argument, people often say or do things they wish they could take back. Unfortunately, this is not possible, especially if someone calls the police during or after the dispute. Under these circumstances, a fight between you and someone else can become a fight between you and the criminal justice system.

Considering how quickly these situations can spiral out of control, it is crucial that you take whatever steps you can to avoid making things much, much worse. This is a lesson one taxi driver should have taken to heart when he got into an argument over a fare with a few of his passengers.

According to reports, the man responded to a call from three women. He drove them to their destination, but upon arrival, the women said they would not pay him because they disagreed with the fare. In response, the driver locked the doors and drove away with the women inside the vehicle.

For about 10 minutes, the man drove around with the women in his cab. They were eventually able to unlock the doors and get out. And while no one was hurt, the man ended up being charged with three counts of abduction.

There are three things that people in a similarly heated exchange would be wise to do to avoid ending up in the same unfortunate situation as this driver.

  1. Take a deep breath and try to calm down.
  2. Weigh your options. What is more important: being right or avoiding criminal charges?
  3. Leave the situation if it is appropriate. Stepping away from a fight can prevent you from doing something you later regret.

Even if you are unable to do these things and you wind up arrested and facing criminal charges, you still have options to minimize the fallout of potential consequences.

You can consult an attorney who can help you avoid making any costly mistakes that could make your situation worse. With legal representation, you can ensure your side of the story is told and get some peace of mind in knowing that you are not in this difficult situation alone.
