A 19-year-old student at a Texas university recently posed for a picture much different than the one she likely took for her student ID — a mug shot. Authorities arrested the college student on some fairly hefty drug charges related to substances that she allegedly had in her possession. She is believed to have orchestrated a substantial drug ring that supplied several different illicit substances, including marijuana.
Listed on the dean’s list at Blinn College, it is not entirely clear how she became the subject of a drug investigation. However, police claim that she had large amounts of marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine, ecstasy and one other type of drug in her possession. Aside from the actual drugs, digital scales were allegedly recovered alongside an inventory list.
After being arrested she was taken to an area jail where she was booked on multiple counts of manufacturing and delivery of a controlled substance as well as marijuana possession. All three of her charges amount to felonies. Since her arrest, she posted bond and is no longer behind bars.
Felony drug charges can be especially severe and should be handled in as timely and effective a way as possible. The fines for this Texas woman’s charges alone could add up to about $30,000, and the maximum possible jail time would extend well past the end of her life. Facing possibilities such as these can be overwhelming, especially for younger defendants who have not had much time to establish their course in life. However daunting this might be, though, all defendants are still presumed innocent under the law, with access to their legal rights and protections, unless the prosecution is able to definitively prove beyond any reasonable doubt that the full extent of all charges are true.
